Chartered Engineer

We’re always looking for talented Chartered Civil and/or Structural Engineers to join our team and help us develop our engineering consultancy business.

Role overview

You will undertake design, capacity assessment, structural strengthening and refurbishment scheme designs of a multitude of structures in all materials. You will also carry out non-destructive testing, survey and consultancy work, with a focus on bridge and structural investigation.

Other work will include construction stage supervision and project management as employers representative, expert witness for latent defects, forensic engineering, bridge inspection and testing, and specialist investigations for purposes such as capacity assessment, reuse of abutments or suitability of structures for support of complex temporary works.

At Inertia Consulting, we work across 6 key sectors: highways, rail, water, energy, commercial and residential construction, and legal. Our clients include major national and regional contractors, Highways England ASCs, utility companies, housing developers, blue chip corporations and large international insurers and law firms.

Job responsibilities

Your role will cover all aspects of the Inertia Consulting business, including creating and checking structural designs, supervising construction projects, leading inspections and surveys, and coordinating and planning client projects.

You’ll be encouraged to help us keep developing our business, so this is also a client-facing and business development role. You’ll get involved in bid preparation work across our current areas of expertise as well as any other areas into which where you’d like to help expand our business. We’re committed to ongoing training for all our team members and offer a range of courses to develop your skills. These include confined space access, roped access, RYA Powerboat Level II, IPAF and PASMA certification as well as formal Design, Health, Safety and construction contract training.

Please note that there’ll be occasions when you’ll need to work away from home, sometimes overseas, as well as working some nights and weekends. Essentail skills

• Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer
• Experience in design of structures to British Standards and/or Eurocodes
• Experience of managing construction projects
• Experience of managing design teams
• Full, clean driving licence

• Bridge design experience
• Bridge assessment experience
• Experience in structural inspections
• Experience in specification and contract document preparation
• CAD experience
• CSCS card holder
• IPAF
• Medium risk confined spaces certification
• PASMA certification

Person Specification

You’ll be a highly motivated individual who can work equally well on your own or as part of a team. You’ll be expected to competently and effectively manage a multi-skilled team whilst undertaking projects.

Your role will be very varied and would ideally suit someone who’s equally happy to work outdoors, in underground tunnels and reservoirs, on water in our powerboat or pontoons, or using 4x4 vehicles, quad bikes and MEWPs, as creating designs in our office. A flexible attitude towards both the nature and environment of your work is essential.
