Who we are

It all began in 2006 when Inertia Consulting was founded by Director, David Roome. After working for several multinational companies on large bridge engineering projects, David realised there was scope to offer a more personalised service that could be tailored to meet the needs of both small to medium sized businesses and large corporations.

After working together on several projects, David invited fellow Director, Ryan Bradley, to join Inertia. This helped us diversify our offering from bridge design and advanced analysis to non-destructive testing and inspection of civil engineering structures. Over time, we continued to expand our portfolio into the comprehensive suite of services we provide today.

Our success story
Since our inception, we now have a team of staff operating nationwide and overseas. We’re proud to have worked on many high profile projects, including the Olympic Park, Docklands Light Railway, Derwent Valley aqueduct, Spaghetti Junction and the Channel Tunnel Rail Link.

Our work has earned us a number of prestigious awards, notably for our sympathetic restorations of heritage structures including Wilford Suspension Bridge in Nottingham and the 1889 Ferry Bridge at Burton-on-Trent.

What makes us different?

Firstly, our attention to detail is second to none.
When investigating or inspecting a problem for a client, we don’t adopt a one-size-fits-all, ‘tick-sheet’ mentality. Instead, we take a comprehensive approach that’s customised to the project in hand, carried out by experienced and qualified engineers who are committed to doing a thorough job.

Our areas of expertise include several highly specialist skills, such as confined space entry and control; expert witness services to the legal sector; and innovative problem-solving techniques for complex design, inspection and testing projects, and temporary works.

All our services are managed in-house and delivered by the Inertia Consulting team and our partners. This means we can offer a fully integrated ‘one stop shop’ service that represents genuine value for money and frequently exceeds our clients’ expectations.

Our philosophy and approach

Whether we’re providing a single service or a bespoke integrated package, our clients can be confident we’ll deliver the works on time and on budget.

This can be summarised approach very simply: ‘Bring us a problem and we’ll bring you a solution.’ By taking this approach, we can build strong client relationships based on trust. This enables us to create long-term strategic partnerships, where we become a preferred supplier and keep adding value to our clients’ businesses with every new project.

Corporate & Social Responsibility

People not Profit
Another core aspect of the Inertia Consulting ethos is ‘People not Profit’. We’ll support our staff in their chosen career paths, something that’s backed up by our status as an Institution of Civil Engineers accredited training company. Over the years, we’ve funded team members through apprenticeships and degrees, and helped them become chartered or incorporated.

We’re especially keen to encourage the next generation of engineers. That’s why we work with Nottingham Trent University to sponsor a graduate award and deliver guest lectures. We’ve also supported our local universities by hosting interns and sitting on university Industry Liaison Panels.

Equally, we want to contribute to the Derby community where our office is based and many of us also live. Recent projects have included giving talks about careers in engineering to local schools and helping a Scout group obtain a 99 year lease on a piece of woodland from the Woodland Trust. We’re also pleased to carry out pro bono work for charities.

Our approach to Quality, the Environment and Health & Safety

Quality
All our projects are undertaken by qualified and experienced engineers with extensive skills and knowledge in their respective fields, under our ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System. Our clients know they can rely on the Inertia Consulting team and our partners to provide the highest standards of quality and workmanship.
Environment
Helping protect the environment is important to us, and we’re proud to have achieved ISO 14001:2015 accreditation for Environmental Management. We always take an eco-friendly approach, carrying out ecological surveys, and planning and managing each project to minimise environmental impact. All our designs are created with sustainability in mind.
Health & Safety
Operating in high risk environments means we understand risk and controls and so take Health & Safety very seriously. We make sure our staff always have the best quality equipment and PPE to help them stay safe at work. Each team member receives regular training and CPD to keep their Health & Safety knowledge and practices up to date. We hold ISO45001:2018 for Occupational Health & Safety Management and ensure effective risk management is at the heart of all services we provide.
